I “hennaed” this weekend again. It was my 4th attempt and my first attempt with Jamila henna. I know a lot of bloggers out there seem to love the henna, but for me, we have to break up. And it’s not me, it’s henna. It has been 5 days since my henna treatment, (which was a mix of henna honey, yogurt, herb infused water and a little olive oil.) 5 days! And my hair still feels like straw. But more worryingly is that there is some serious breaking going on. When I detangled tonight the amount of hair that came out was comparable to when I would take my extensions out. Not a good sign.
This kind of make me sad because the color of my hair this time turned out really nice. It glows a really bright red in the sun, and when I wore my hair in my “PinUp Girl” style I felt like a cute, brown Lucille Ball.
Bottom line though: Henna treats me bad, so no matter how cute it appears to be, we gotta break up.
That and it keeps turning my fingers orange no matter how careful I am with the gloves… this week the nail buffer has been my best friend. Orange tinted nails are not pretty on me… how about you?

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear about your henna break-up
I was reading your ist of ingredients and I’m wondering if that has something to do with the dryness and breaking: yogurt, I thought, was generally used for protein….if you’ve been using yogurt with all your treatments, you could be overdosing on protein! I just use green tea to mix my henna and add honey before I apply….really simple, but I’ve gotten all the results that everyone has raved about. And it takes me about 30 min worth of rinsing/co-washing so that I know I’ve gotten it all out and no left over henna will dry out my hair.
I know you’re ready to throw in the towel, but I just wanted to pose some suggestions that might work for you! HTH

Sorry to hear about your henna experience.
Did you deep treatment after you washed out the henna. This is an essential step. I’ve had great results with henna…my hair is sooooo thick.

To be honest it may have been to yogurt I have heard very few naturals say they mix theirs with yogurt. Green tea and Honey like the other commenter mentioned seems like a good mix.

Hey Cherrylola,
I LOVE the results I get using henna. Like Valerie Nicole, I use green tea and honey or olive oil.
I totally agree with your that the raved about Jamila henna sucks. I had nail staining for at least a week and a half later. I used gloves, shampoo’ed, dc’ed, and shampoo’ed and conditioned a week later and was still getting staining when I went to style my hair.
Looking a the picture, looks like you bought in bulk like myself. I’m ready to sell it and go back to my local indian store brand (Dulhan).
I think I told you this in a previous post but, I didn’t get the straw feeling and used Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose and Honey.
I used the same technique with both of my treatments but used olive oil the first time and honey the second time in my henna mix.

Oh no. I am sorry you did not have a favorable experience. Two questions: 1. Did you deep condition after? If so what conditioner did you use? and 2. Have you ever tried it with just Green Tea, honey and Henna? I use the above and my hair is thriving. I also make sure to use a very mositurizing conditioner afterwards with a little oil and my hair is like butter….

I think Valerie hit on it, too much protein. Are you a regular user of protein conditioning treatments ? It is advised to not use anything with additional protein when doing regular Hennas, it is a major protein treatment on it’s own.
I am also a Jamila fan, and got the super straw feeling result the first time around but not since. For the best color results I don’t recommend adding anything but the lemon juice and water as other ingredients get in the way of the color penetrating the hair shaft.
Also – make sure and do the vinegar rinse. Cider or Red wine is the best. It helps rinse out excess color, seal down the cuticle and softens in the process.

PS – A little bit of shea butter on the ends works wonders too.

I think the breakage may be due to the yogurt – isnt yogurt a protein? Henna strengthens the hair similar to a protein treatment so if you have done alot of cherrylola treatments and then a henna treatment with protein added in its probably very detrimental for your hair. My amatuer recommendation is to steer clear of anything other than moisturizing conditioners for the next several weeks. I am so sorry this happened.

I was just about to say….
Cut out the yogurt and herb infused water. It’s a bad bad combo with henna. Yes, henna is drying, but a deep condition or two should fix it.
There’s too much protein going on in your mix

I had a similar problem from using Natural Instincts. I do not know if you use store bought products but suave has a conditioner called Damage Care. I put it in my dry hair. Left it in 3 hours then rinsed. I then put in coconut oil and braided. And stretch this out to once a week. Then keep your hair wrapped up in a scarf as much as possible.
Henna should not be used more than every 60 to 30 days. Finally when rinsing rinse out as much as you can. Put conditioner in and it will pull the last of the henna out.
