From black hair mag
I’ve decided to start another new feature. Ads that appear in our world that I think send the wrong message or marginalize women of color.
I’m sure you’ve seen this one before.
One of the hair memories I hold while sitting in a hair salon is reading the black hair magazines. I’ll be honest- I’ve never bought one of these mags, and only ever looked at them while waiting a the salon. But the advertising in them sticks out in my mind. There are a lot of ads to hate within those pages. There are two ads that i hate the most and this is one of them. (There is another that I hate even more but I’m still looking for it. I’ll post it when I find it.)
I don’t understand how ads like this even make it into the pages of a magazine. Don’ t the editors have a responsibility to the reader as well?
I like the before picture better. And I always have. How about you?

“Yuck.” Are they serious? This is ridiculous and self hating. We have been so brainwashed. I think her hair looks fab and I want mine to look just like it!

Yuck indeed. I hate these ads too, and I’m convinced they’re part of the reason why my girlfriends feel like their hair is disgusting until they run to the salon. If you go to naturallycurly.com, they have an entire message board dedicated to ads, TV shows and other things that participate in “curl-bashing.” The forum is called the Hall of Shame…. some interesting stuff in there.

Whats really messed up is that the ad says the woman needs a miracle! Like God needs to come down and change her cursed hair or something. It did look good before and after it was just boring. I hated this ad the first time I saw it too. Actually I cut out the before photo to inspire me on my transition because I liked her before hair so much.

Her hair was beautiful as is before the perm. But I noticed this too while looking through black hair mags all you see is where to buy Indian hair for weaves and perms or pressed hair! There is hardly anything for natural women and when they do occasionally throw a “natural” hair style in its always braids! I no twist outs braids outs Bantu knots nada just cornrows and individual braids such a same at how they promote self hate

I agree. Recently I was flicking through Black Beauty , a mag in the UK and it had one page for curly, kinky hair. On it there were 4 pictures and to were clearly straw sets on relaxed hair. Hopefully with enough of us talking this will change…

Because of their relaxer advertising campaign, I’ve never even touched a Dr. Miracles product and I never will.

I know the other add you are talking about I am sure…It is the other Dr. Miracle with the women in the bathroom with the hair sticking up and she is making a disgruntle face. Somethng jumps out and gives her a Dr. Miraces perm and at the end she is smiling and happy. That add needs to poof be gone.
